ISO 9001 Certification – Quality Management

ISO 9001 - Quality Management System

ISO 9001 is an international standard that specifies the requirements for a Quality Management System (QMS). It helps organizations ensure they consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements, fostering continual improvement and enhanced customer satisfaction.

Components

Key Components of ISO 9001

01

Process Approach

ISO 9001 emphasizes understanding and managing interrelated processes to achieve consistent and predictable results.

02

Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) Cycle

This iterative method is used for controlling and continually improving processes and products.

03

Risk-Based Thinking

The standard integrates risk management into the QMS, encouraging organizations to identify and address potential risks and opportunities.

Process

Certification Process

Stage 1

Audit (Documentation Review)

The auditor reviews your documented management system, confirms the scope of certification and evaluates your readiness for the Stage 2 audit. Any areas of concern are reported so they can be addressed before Stage 2.

Stage 2

Audit (On-Site Assessment)

The auditor evaluates the implementation and effectiveness of your management system through interviews, observation and a review of records. Any nonconformities are reported for corrective action.

Final Step

Certification Decision

A qualified reviewer who was not part of the audit team reviews the results. Once any major nonconformities are resolved, your ISO 9001 certificate is issued, valid for three years.

After Certification

Maintaining Your Certification

Surveillance Audits

Surveillance audits are carried out at least once a year to confirm that your management system continues to conform to ISO 9001 and is maintained and improved.

Recertification

Before your certificate expires, a recertification audit reviews your full management system and renews your certification for another three years.

Certificate Transfers

Who Needs ISO 9001 Certification?

ISO 9001 can be applied by any organization, regardless of size or industry. Certification is often required by customers or requested during supplier prequalification, particularly in:

  • Manufacturing and fabrication
  • Construction and engineering
  • Distribution, logistics and warehousing
  • Professional and technical services
  • Suppliers to government and large corporate buyers

What Affects the Cost and Length of Your Audit?

Audit time is set according to international accreditation requirements and depends mainly on:

  • The number of people working under your management system, including part-time and contract workers
  • The number of sites and shifts
  • The scope and complexity of your products, services and processes
  • Whether ISO 9001 is audited together with ISO 14001 or ISO 45001 as an integrated system

Independent and Impartial

As a certification body, Apex Systems Registrar does not provide consulting or implementation services for the management systems we certify. Our role is to audit your system independently against ISO 9001. That independence is what gives your certificate its credibility with customers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is an ISO 9001 certificate valid?
Three years, as long as surveillance audits are completed at least once a year.

Which version of ISO 9001 do you certify to?
ISO 9001:2015, including Amendment 1:2024, which asks organizations to consider whether climate change is a relevant issue for their quality management system. The new edition, ISO 9001:2026, was published in September 2026, and we expect to offer audits to it from early 2027. Certified organizations have until 30 September 2029 to transition. See what ISO 9001:2026 means for certified companies.

Can ISO 9001 be combined with other standards?
Yes. ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 share a common structure and can be audited together, which usually reduces total audit time compared with separate audits.
